At Mission Heights Primary School, we provide engaging and meaningful learning experiences that support students to become confident, active, reflective and independent learners.
Our curriculum is based on the New Zealand Curriculum and reflects the needs, interests and strengths of our students and community.
We aim to create a positive and supportive learning environment where students are challenged to achieve their best, develop a strong sense of identity, and become lifelong learners.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for students to:
engage in challenging and meaningful learning;
develop strong foundations in literacy and numeracy;
explore their interests and curiosities;
learn through hands-on and authentic experiences;
make connections between different areas of learning;
use digital technologies purposefully;
develop their understanding of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori;
work collaboratively with others;
take increasing responsibility for their own learning;
learn in a safe, positive and supportive environment.
We prepare our students for an increasingly diverse and changing world.
Learning at MHP goes beyond simply acquiring knowledge. Students develop the skills, strategies, attitudes and values they need to become self-directed, creative and enthusiastic learners.
Our flexible learning environments, collaborative approach and use of digital technologies support students to connect, create, problem-solve and apply their learning to real-world contexts.
We use an integrated approach to connect learning across different curriculum areas.
Students explore relevant and authentic contexts that allow them to make connections between their knowledge, skills and experiences. Literacy and numeracy are woven into learning wherever appropriate, alongside inquiry, digital technologies and critical-thinking skills.
Students are encouraged to contribute their interests and ideas, helping make learning meaningful and personally relevant.
Personalised learning is at the heart of our approach at MHP.
We place students at the centre of the learning process and support them to understand what they are learning, how they learn best, and what they need to do next.
Personalised learning at MHP is supported through:
high expectations for every learner;
effective, research-informed teaching;
purposeful assessment and feedback;
engaging and challenging learning experiences;
opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning;
strong partnerships with families and whānau.
Our Health and Physical Education programme supports students to develop healthy, active lifestyles and take responsibility for their wellbeing and choices.
Our CARE values — Courage, Action, Respect and Empathy — are explicitly taught and reflected throughout our learning.
Students participate in regular physical education and have opportunities to take part in sporting activities and programmes delivered by MHP staff and external providers.
Our wider wellbeing programme includes initiatives such as Pause, Breathe, Smile (PBS), supporting students to develop strategies that contribute to positive wellbeing.
