Supporting Learning at Home

Home learning at Mission Heights Primary School is designed to complement classroom learning while helping students develop positive learning habits, independence and confidence.

Activities focus primarily on reading, spelling and basic facts, with additional learning or research activities provided when appropriate.

We encourage families to make learning at home a positive experience and to take opportunities to talk, read and learn together.

Junior Learning Community | Years 1–3

The focus of home learning in the Junior Learning Community is to consolidate and reinforce learning from school.

Students are encouraged to:

• Read every day — a reading book is sent home Monday–Thursday, with poetry reading on Friday.

• Practise spelling — spelling words are linked to the structured literacy programme being taught in class.

• Practise maths facts — particularly number bonds and basic multiplication facts as appropriate.

Families can also support learning through everyday activities such as talking, telling stories, singing songs, sharing rhymes and practising number facts together.

Senior Learning Community | Years 4–6

Home learning in the Senior Learning Community helps students develop independence, study habits and responsibility for their learning.

Students are expected to:

• Read every day for at least 30 minutes.

• Practise spelling using a spelling list based on their individual learning needs.

• Practise multiplication facts as well as addition and subtraction facts to 20.

• Complete relevant research or learning projects when assigned.

Spelling is reviewed and tested regularly as part of classroom learning.

Where appropriate, students can access additional learning resources at home.

Junior Learning Community

Maths Seeds and Reading Eggs are available to purchase through Kindo. These resources are voluntary and are not monitored by teachers.

Senior Learning Community

Mathletics, Reading Eggspress and Lexia Core 5 are available to purchase through Kindo. These resources are voluntary and are not monitored by teachers.
